This lady uses a car cake pan (in this case the wilton racing car pan) to make the cake shape, then covers it with sugarpaste.
If you really want a car shaped cake then this is the easiest way to do that, although a dedicated car shaped pan is a bit of a luxury.
You can often find somewhere local that will rent out these shaped pans (strangely, my local chemist does!).
This is the simplest way to go - plain, square cake with a toy on top for the car.
This is good if you have a lot of people and need a big cake, if you're in a hurry, or if you are worried that your car carving skills might not be up to scratch. Since there's no carving, it's also suitable for just about any type of cake (even meringue)
You can still be creative though! Icing the flames coming out the back of the car is a really nice touch.
This one is another using toys on top - but this time with a racetrack and monster truck arena in the middle. Chocolate icing used as the mud for a monster truck cake works so well - plus you can be as messy with the icing as you like!
If monster trucks aren't your thing, how about using toy diggers or tractors instead.
If you are using toys, make sure you give them a wash first - it's going to be sitting on something you're going to eat after all.
I love these.. I've seen similar done with small baguettes to make racing car sandwiches.
You could do similar with mini-rolls, or any other finger cakes, and use any round sweet for wheels.
The jelly baby drivers are a good idea, (is it me, or is the one just to the left of centre facing sideways?) but I think that I would cut them in half so they actually looked as though they were at the right height to drive the cars.
Although a bowl of leftover jelly baby legs is a pretty creepy thought.
