For my sister's birthday I decided to make a cake based on the luggage from Terry Pratchett's Discworld books. For those who don't know, the luggage is a large sapient pearwood chest, with hundreds of feet which follows Rincewind the wizard.

Obviously this requires a large number of feet - for which I decided sugarpaste was just the ticket.

Feet everywhere

First I made some vaguely flesh coloured sugarpaste - I find that you need to add both pink (or a touch of red) and along with a very slight touch of yellow - and if it's looking too peachy then a very, very small dab of green.

Once I was happy with the colour, it was time to shape the feet.

I start by rolling it into a tube, then putting a slight kink:

Shaping the heel - look at your foot - you'll see it narrows just above your heel.

Using a knife I cut some toes (anatomically correct five toes I decided). Making sure one is slightly larger to be the big toe.

Using my finger I just tap the toes back towards the foot a bit to round them off..

I've gone for all sorts of different foot postures - lets make this one stand on tip-toe

Finally I balance it on my Wii RockBand drumstick to keep it in place while it dries off and firms up.
